It's hard for many people to predict the possibility of a propane shortage and the associated price hikes. It's the kind of situation that can leave many stuck in the cold with no recourse. It's a serious issue, but there are things you can do to mitigate the situation.

Use Less Propane

This may sound impossible to you, but if you really think about it, there are many ways you can cut back on your propane usage. Many of the things people use propane for aren't strictly necessary. If you have propane-powered appliances, you can try alternatives.

For example, if you use a gas-powered dryer, you may want to consider drying less and hanging more. Or, you can use a laundromat. If you have a gas-powered range, try cooking more food at one time and storing it, rather than cooking every day. Or, you can eat cold foods, use the microwave more, or use a toaster oven.

Use Less Hot Water

If you use propane to heat your water, there are a lot of things you can do to keep usage down in that area as well. Consider all the things you use hot water for. Now, think of ways to use less of it. For example:

• Use cold water whenever possible (hand washing, cleaning, etc.)
• Take shorter showers, or take less showers
• Use your dishwasher only when it's completely full

All of these things will help you conserve your propane while still keeping to your normal lifestyle.

Use Less Heat

When it's cold, your first instinct is to turn up the heat to keep you and your family warm. However, there are other ways to stay warm without the need to turn your heat to its maximum setting.

• Wear warm clothes indoors
• Use space heaters
• Winterise the entire house
• Turn off heat when no one is home
• Use a programmable thermostat

The more ways you find to cut back on your heating needs, the more propane you will save. Not only will all of these things help you to conserve propane, they will also help to lower your energy costs overall.
